Play Area / Community Space

What is it all about?

The village play area, or community space as we refer to it now, is in need of refurbishment. The parish coucil has formed a sub-committee to run a project that will consult with the village, raise the funds, select a supplier, agree a design and commission the works.

The committee consists of Mr David Barton, Mrs Romy Barton, Mr Mike Fountain, Mr David Maslan, Mrs Laura Cheney and Mr Chris Legg.

Our aim to provide a space that as much as possible is fun and interesting to all that use it. With this in mind we want to provide play equipment for toddlers to teens. We have also been asked to provide some sports facilities in the form of a basketball hoop by young people in the village. As we are looking to provide a facility that is for the whole community to use, we are concidering putting in a Boules rink and would welcome comments on this.

Initial consultations with suppliers indicate a total cost of the project is between £40,000 and £60,000, dependant on the final design chosen, and how much work can be undertaken by the village to offset costs.

Update. Seems our first target was somwhat ambishous and funding we were told would be available and "easy" to get was not quite true, so we have scaled back our target to the region of £25,000 as we are more confident of attaining in a reasonable timescale. We can of still launch a new project for further enhancements at a later date if the village shows a need or interest.

News June 2009

Well it finally looks like we are getting close to reaching our target funding and hope to start work very soon in the Play Area / Community Space. The target cost of the project is circa £25,000 and so far our total is £23471.00. We have chosen a supplier - Playground Supplies- and are in the final stages of design and negotiation. This does not mean we stop fundraising, we still need to find the funds for some final pieces of equipment. The centrepiece of the area is a climbing / slide combination unit as shown below.

Other equipment we are installing include from left to right, a Saucer swing, Basketball hoop, Super Seesaw, it is hoped that some volunteers from the village will also build and install a Boules rink.

We have had a donation of £2500 from Magna Housing Association which pushes us close to our final target.

£100 was raised in conjunction with the Dorchester Roary lottery. Thanks to everyone who supported us.

This years bonfire raised £318 which was split between this fund and the pre-school.

Thank you to all who supported our Moviola nights this winter.  We raised a total of £75.81 for the Community Space Fund.

We have also received funding from West Dorset District Council Leisure Development Fund to the sum of £5,000.00.  This takes our total to about £20,000.00. We hope to start some of the work by the summer.

Once again thank you for your support.

A Big Thank You to all our helpers at the bonfire night.  We raised the sum of £205.50.

The raffle in association with the Dorchester Round table has taken £65.00 so far.  (If anyone would like tickets we still have a few left - contact details below.  Remember there is a £500 1st prize, just in time for Christmas).  We hope you all enjoyed the evening and hope to be able to do it again next year.  A special thank you to Magna Housing Association for the use of the playing field as our venue, to John Morris and Alastair Cooper for the loan of the bales, and also to Mr. & Mrs. Tucker for the use of their electricity.

Our next event will be Moviola at the Village Hall on Saturday 2nd February 2008 and another on the 1st March 2008.  Look out for posters in the villages for more details nearer the time or contact Romy Barton for more information.

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU for the anonymous donation of £3,000.00.  This is a huge boost to our fundraising efforts.

The Moviola raised the princely sum of £75.81, but was very well supported by the villagers.

We have received a donation of £5000.00 from WDDC leisure development fund.

As of April 2008 we have a total of £19600.00 in "the pot"
