About the Parish Council

Sydling St. Nicholas Parish Council was created as a result of the 1894 Local Government Act. It held its first meeting in the Village School Room on the 4th December of that year when seven members of the village were elected to serve under the chairmanship of Mr John Bush.

It is noteworthy to mention that one of its first tasks over 100 years ago was to establish a sub-committee to investigate the causes of local flooding! Problems have arisen ever since but the Flood Alleviation Scheme introduced by Wessex Water in 1996 was tested to the limit during the atrocious weather of year 2000 and proved its effectiveness to a large extent.

A major contribution of the Parish Council was to commission a Village Appraisal in 1983, setting out a way forward in which the village could be expanded sympathetically. Seventeen years later it is gratifying to note that this conservation area has remained intact apart from two breaks in its outline, which allowed a few starter homes to be built.

A fascinating summary of the main items of business conducted by the Parish Council since its inception has recently been produced by Denis Buckland and Ian Bryant. This is contained within the Millennium Capsule for a future generation to enjoy.
