Open Gardens Weekend 26th and 27th May

On Sunday and Monday 26th & 27th May why not have a relaxing afternoon from 2pm to 6pm in the beautiful Dorset village of Sydling St Nicholas looking round some lovely gardens.  The village is quietly situated in a south-facing chalk stream valley in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Get your tickets and guides in the Village Hall. Refreshments and toilets are available in the Village Hall.  There will be some excellent plants for sale in a marquee on the Village Hall lawn.  There is adequate street parking in the village.

Latest News on the Village Hall Refurbishment

Dear all

Refurbishment of the Village Hall is nearly complete but has slipped slightly.  John Stiles will finish the painting on the 1st or 2nd May but, for various reasons not of our making, delivery of the kitchen equipment is not yet complete so the final date of completion is not yet known.  Without the kitchen worktop and refrigeration facilities it has been decided that Cakes and Teas will replace the scheduled Cream Teas for the Duck Race on the 5th May.  Our apologies for that.  In the meantime the small room (currently called The Committee Room) is being used for small functions and can be booked.  Contact Helen on 01300 341777 ( – or Jo on 01300 341620 ( for details.

Sir Christopher Lees, Chairman of the South Dorset Local Action Group for LEADER presented trustees of Sydling St Nicholas Village Hall with a cheque for £97,071 to kickstart a refurbishment programme which has been a year in the planning.

The work will include an extension to, and refitting of, the kitchen and serving area, the creation of new storage facilities for hall furniture, refurbishment of the area to the rear of the stage and a new heating system.

Chairman of the Village Hall Trustees Laura Cheney said: “This award is the culmination of 12 months of hard work by the trustees.  “We are very excited about being able to turn our ideas into reality by early next year and by so doing provide a first rate facility for the benefit of the whole community”.

LEADER funding is available to local businesses, communities, farmers, foresters and land managers. LEADER is a French acronym which roughly translates as ‘Liaison among Actors in Rural Economic Development’.
